Can't Wait

'Found' my sec sch English teacher on FB about two weeks ago. I've never been one who like/prefer a specific teacher but some 'special' or 'outstanding' ones do stay in my mind. Note the open and close brackets. What I mean is when compared to other teachers, not necessary that they really go an extra mile or did something unusual etc. Ehm... I think to be able to leave a mark in someone's memory is pretty good already and honestly speaking, there are many other factors that 'allow' the teacher to show his/her 'specialty'/'uniqueness'. Its a fact of life. We're living in a realistic word. Chances are, between an 'alright', average student (who doesn't get into trouble and does basically what is expected of him/her) and a teacher, the teacher is unlikely to be able to do some 'extra'. The stories we hear about how noble the teacher is normally revolves around a certain circumstance.

Anyway, back to my earlier 'topic'. A couple of years after I graduated, I heard about her leaving Singapore for voluntary work but that was about it. Found out its accurate info after communicating with her and indeed she had been in Cambodia, teaching English at a centre her church set up. She was there for 3 years before moving to Perth for her Masters degree and will be back in SG this year. That's exactly the kind of thing I was dreaming of. However, admittedly, I'm not as noble. Haha.

While she actually did it when she's still at a pretty young age, my plan was more 'rigid' and 'less noble' as I was hoping to teach and work till late middle-age and then travel to a less privileged nation to set up some form of centre/sch for kids there. In her case, she 'sacrificed' her youth but I guess that's probably the diff between men and women, since guys have slightly heavier social responsibilities (not sexual discrimination, ok? :P). We have to secure our basic needs and necessity first whereas for the ladies, they probably can afford less worries on that.

Anyway, it's inspiring in a way cos things are usually easier said than done. Have heard of so many views/wishes but in the end, not many were really established. Its through real examples like hers that acts as constant reminder to me that its achievable and many a times, its the heart that's overruling the mind.

4 days to restart. Can't wait. Jul will be an interesting month of mix feelings. Next Jul will be even more so I guess. Ha!
